Shoulder or Tote Bag Crochet Pattern

This pattern is from the book "Knit and Crochet with Rug Yarn" By Coats & Clark. Books No. 201.

Materials: Coats & Clark's ONT Rug Yarn, (70 yd skeins). 3 skeins of Rusticana, and 2 skeins of Spring Green or desired colors. (these colors may no longer be available)

Crochet Hook - Size H

4 buttons and 2 brass rings.

Guage: 3 sc = 1 inch, 7 rows = 2 inches

Be sure to check your gauge before starting bag. Use any size hook which will obtain the stitch gauge above.

Pocket

Starting at lower edge with Green, ch 18.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across -17 sc.. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until 16 rows have been completed. Break off and fasten. Lay piece aside to be used later.

Front

Starting at lower edge, with Rusticana ch 35, drop Rusticana, (with Green, yarn over and draw through loop on hook) twice.

Row !: (wrong side): Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, drop Green to front of work, pick up Rusticana, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook-color changed in first sc; with Rusticana, sc in each remaining ch across -36 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each sc across to within last 2 Rusticana sc, draw up a loop in next sc, drop Rusticana to back of work, pick up Green, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook-always change color in this way; with Green, sc in next 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: With Green sc in each Green sc, change color in next Rusticana sc and drop Green to front of work, with Rusticana sc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: With Rusticana sc in each sc across to within last 2 Rusticana sc, change color in next sc and drop Rusticana to back of work, with Green sc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately until there are 18 sc of each color.

Next Row: With Green sc in each Green sc, then continue with Green, sc in each sc worked on last row of Pocket. Ch 1, turn. Continue to work over these 35 sc for 15 more rows. Drop Green. Now work over the Rusticana sections as follows:

Next Row: Pick up Rusticana, draw up a loop in each of first 2 sc, yarn over and draw through all loop on hook-1 sc decreased; sc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn.

Following Row: Sc in each sc across to within last 2 Rusticana sc, dec 1 sc over the last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows until 10 sc remain. Last st worked on last row is inner edge. Ch 10 for buttonloop, turn, then sl st in first ch of ch 10.

Next Row: Dec first sc, sc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn. Continue as before, decreasing l sc at inner edge on every row until 2 sc remain. Drop Rusticana loop, pick up Green at other end and ch 1, turn.

Next Row. Sc in each sc across to within last sc of Green section, draw up a loop in next sc, drop Green, pick up Rusticana and draw dropped Rusticana loop through both loops on hook, with Rusticana draw up a loop in each of next 2 Rusticana sc, drop Rusticana, pick up Green and draw through all loops on hook. Ch 1, turn.

Following Row: Sc in each sc across. Break off and fasten.

Back

Reversing colors, work same as for Pocket and Front.

Base

Starting at center with Rusticana, ch 32.

Rnd 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across to within last ch, 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch, ending with sc in same ch where first 2 sc were made. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnds 2-3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of the 3 sc group at opposite end and ending with 1 sc in same st where first 2 sc were made. Join. Break off and fasten.

Shoulder Strap

With Rusticana ch 125, having 3 ch sts to 1 inch.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each sc across to within last 5 sc, ch 3 for buttonhole, skip next 3 sc, sc in last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in first 2 sc, sc in next 3 ch, sc in next sc and in each sc across. Break off and fasten.

Press pieces through a damp cloth. Sew the 3 edges of each pocket in place. Sew side seams. Sew base to lower edge of front and back. Sew 1 ring to top of each side seam. Draw shoulder strap through rings. Leaving buttonhole end free, sew opposite end in place 1 inch up from ring. Sew 1 button to strap 2 inches up from ring. Sew 1 button at opposite end of strap 4 inches from buttonhole. Strap may be shortened by buttoning to other button. Sew a button oppostie buttonloop on front and back.
