File Your Taxes for Free

You can file your Federal income tax for free with a few stipulations. The software is provided by the IRS and The Free File Alliance. The Free File Alliance is a group of software companies that have agreed to supply the programs for free.

Who is Eligible?

If your 2010 adjustable rate income was $58,000 or less, you may be eligible to file for free. Some of the participating companies may require a lower income and some require you to live in certain states, so you need to check the info for each company before you choose which software you will use. The $58,000 requirement applies to both single filers and married couples filing joint returns. If your spouse made $58,000 and you also earned income, you won't be able to file for free.

Participating companies have different requirements, which include your age, which federal forms you need to file, and some companies will only allow free filing if you make under $33,000. There are quite a few software companies to choose from and you should be able to find one that will fill your requirements.

filing. You will need to check the company's home page for more information.

How Do I Use the Software

You will not need to download software to use the programs. You just need to go to the software company's site and fill in your return there. Each company has there site safely encrypted, so you won't need to worry about safety issues.
