tradition of using a stocking at Christmas began with the celebration of St Nick's day. St Nicholas is remembered for helping
the poor and needy. He would place coins in the shoes of poor people when they were sleeping. At first they placed shoes out,
but since that time they have been replaced with the Christmas stocking.
