You need to be sure to try this hat. Not only is the pattern free, but the crochet goes quickly. It takes little yarn and you could use scrap yarn to crochet it.

I've been using mine for walks in the morning. Since it goes over the ears it has kept me nice and warm. Even though it is suppose to be spring here. The days have been cold and you want a winter coat and a warm hat and scarf.

Materials

1.5 ounces of Main Color and 1 ounce of Contrasting Color of Caron Simply Soft Yarn or similar weight light worsted weight yarn. (If using a heavier worsted weight yarn such as Red Heart Super Saver, use a size H crochet hook instead of the I hook)

After the 4th Round your work should = 4 3/8" across
(If you are getting a little smaller gauge, the hat will just stretch to fit, but if it is larger adjust your hook size)

Abbreviations Used

CC - Contrasting Color

Ch - Chain

Dc - Double crochet

MC - Main Color

Ea - Each

Sl - Slip Stitch

Sp - Space

St - Stitch


Note: Rounds are not turned.

Instructions

Ch 4. Join to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, (counts as first dc now and throughout) Work 11 dc in ring. Join with a sl st to top of ch 2. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, work a dc in same space as ch 2. 2 dc in each dc around. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in ea of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (48 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in ea of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in ea of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (60 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in ea of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in ea of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (72 dc)

Rnd 7: Work even in dc. End off MC. (72 dc)

Rnd 8-9: With CC, work even in dc. End off CC. (72 dc)

Rnd 10: With MC, repeat Row 7.

Rnd 11-12: Repeat Row 8-9.

Rnd. 13-15: With MC work work even in dc. End off and work in yarn at end of Row 15.
